Our Christmas Tree, 12/2004

Well, family lands tomorrow so I guess, yes, there really is a Christmas this year, Santa Claus.

On the one hand, I'm sad because we let a lot of traditions slip this year - we didn't sing in the Messiah, we didn't get our tree at our favorite farm, we didn't light up the house to Chevy-Chase-like proportions.

On the other hand, the tree looks pretty good. (Even if smaller and more expensive than usual). And, come to think of it, CD's started some new traditions with Bear that bring a little of his culture to our son.

Yet... Over at that first hand? We forgot to budget or plan Christmas gifts because we were so caught up, you know, in the tension. We've had to cobble together holiday childcare, gift-buying, and whatnot out of dental floss and ceiling wax. I'm not getting any joy in this last-minute thing. It's empty. And Bear has been allowed more television in the last month than in his whole life previous. Combined.

But, wait. Over at that other hand, we've never had such a relaxed Advent. It's amazing what throwing up your hands can do for your mood. We're spending loads of time together as the 3 of us. For my part, grateful there IS a 3 of us celebrating together.

Dagnabbit, back at that first hand? I'm sick. I know it. He knows it. And now I have to go the doctor and be told it. And when I talked to Bear about my doctor's appointment, he asked if I would see my uncle there - since my uncle is still so ill. And I had to get down on my knees and tell Bear 'No honey, Uncle M's in the hospital for Christmas. So they can take care of them there.' And Bear asked, 'But will Santa find him there?'

U-turn back to that first hand. Because Bear? He's my son and he's healthy and he's got his family and his loving heart is twice the size of that little body. And in a couple of days, we're going to get to see his face on Christmas morning.

Yeah, OK. That one is going to trump all my other hands. So I'll stop dealing here.

You're one up on me, Corp Mom! No tree here I'm afraid...

Lots of snowflakes cut from coffee filters though...
