Domain Pirates
February 03, 2009 | Category: In My Life
After I started this blog, I began thinking that eventually I would move over to my own domain. So I reserved the domain name "CorporateMommy dot com" through a friend.
In 2007, I forgot to renew it on its expiration. When I went to try, I discovered that a squatter had taken the name and parked it. Meaning - they didn't want to do anything with it themselves, just re-sell it to the highest bidder.
For a $12 name, they were asking thousands. Pirates.
For the last 18 months, that's been pissing me off. I don't have that much money. And besides - hasn't it been my work that, in part, made it worth that much in the first place??
So I bought the cheaper "corporatemommy.net" and just kept checking to see of those leeches ever let my other name expire.
They haven't.
Meanwhile, my host - the lovely and talented Pixy - is porting all the MuNu sites over to a new service (New Corporate Mommy ghost). Pixy has been hosting me for free for 5 years and I'm profoundly grateful - but part of me is exhausted at the idea of learning a new platform and redesign, etc. etc. and wonders if now is finally the time to break away.
On the other hand, being part of the Munuviana family provides a built-in support network. Leaving it would be a pretty scary proposition.
And the pirates still have my preferred name.
Anyway, that's what is on my mind this cold and sunny Tuesday...
