Buh-Bye

January 29, 2009 | Category: Not The Nightly News

buhbyeblagojovich.jpgI've been watching all day, waiting for the announcement.

Is that macabre?

I used to support Blagojevich. I mean, he had to be better than what we had before - right?

Not so much.

I've been angry for a long time. Not because of the corruption - but because, once elected, our new governor did something no governor had done before: he didn't move into the Governor's Mansion.

In fact, he and his family didn't even move to the capital, Springfield. They stayed 200 miles away, in Chicago. Using the government's private plane to commute - often for only a couple of days a week. At a cost of tens of thousands of dollars.

There is absolutely no excuse for a governor, or anyone really, to lobby for a public office that they have no intention of doing. And I don't care what that talking head of a guy says: The JOB IS IN SPRINGFIELD.

Even in Chicago, Blagojevich preferred a private office instead of the state's one in the Thompson center. Notoriously hard to get to through official channels, as though Illinois government was something to be conducted in hiding, at a whim.

I remember once, Blagojevich giving a speech during some Union negotiations. He blasted the Union for not being willing to put in "an honest day's work". From a man who'd cost the State 70 grand just to be flown down to the bargaining table.

From that moment on, I have had no stomach for this man. Despite his many good acts - the open tolling scheme, for one - I have believed, faithfully, in the day that he would be ousted. That no amount of productivity could outweigh his overall behavior; his refusal to be held accountable, to be where he is needed, to serve instead of be served.

And now that day is here.

I am giddy.

I often tell my son to fight that thing inside that says that other people's misfortunes are somehow good news for us. But in this case, I think I'm all right in breaking out in the Macarena - because his misfortune IS good news. In fact, I might just break out in the Bus Stop, too...

As I've watched this story unravel, I have one question: Is he actually insane?

Until the national story broke, I didn't know anything about him. The things that have happened since then are just fascinating. The truth truly is stranger than fiction.

I do have to say I appreciate the open-road tolling when we're driving back and forth between PA and MN. :)

He definitely seemed to go about his job like he was "entitled" to these perks. Amazing how some people view themselves and their importance. [sigh] Around here, we're giddy about getting rid of our governor and welcoming our new one. Woohoo!
