Ole Ole Ole

June 19, 2006 | Category: Family, It's a Trip

What an amazing weekend.

Saturday, we woke up sort of hoping against hope that the weather people were wrong - that it wouldn't be as hot as predicted. That lasted about 15 minutes. By 8AM, it was already climbing to 90F (32-ishC).

Laura got married in an old, old house that serves as a Unitarian Church, and it was lovely. It was a mix of several religious traditions and very intimate.

The church was built of stone and looked like a small castle, with turrets and secret rooms and... no air conditioning. And not enough electricity to run even portable air conditioners.

By noon the heat index was well over 100F (38C) and we had sweated through our clothes, my makup had washed away, my hair was flat, and we were panting for air in the parking lot as we waited for the bridal party to have their pictures taken.

The world seemed to be leeched of color. I kept expecting Rod Serling to step out and declare that we had been transported into the sun, on an alternate dimension.

After the luncheon (held upstairs at the Church and featuring a wonderful carrot-ginger soup, which was the highlight for me even though I daydreamed it was chilled), everyone was invited back to Laura and her groom's for an open house.

We went home and ran through the sprinkler and watched highlights of the Italy-USA game in the air conditioning.

See, both Laura and her husband claim close ties to their heritage - her, Italian and he, Irish. They included traditions from both cultures in their service and reception - which was very, very sweet. But it was decidedly an American wedding (although there was one lady there in a stellar hat) - which means no one knew the score and there was no little television tucked away somewhere with the game on. Because, you know, it's soccer here.

So we went home, Bear ran through the coolness in his underwear shouting "Ole Ole Ole Ole!", we were a little embaressed about that goal Italy gave the US (but we'll take it, thank you!), CD got outside and watered things and Bear help by playing with the water.

Eventually, we made our way over to Laura's around dusk - to say congratulations again and sit with her in her lovely garden for a spell.

We woke up yesterday with a strange kind of hangover. This wedding has been on the horizon so long that it was kind of like, well - a free weekend day. No hunting for a dress or planning a shower or anything. So Bear and I headed in themorning to run errands and let CD sleep in (for Father's Day) and we saw a doe (a deer, a female deer) walking casually down some front yards.

And after that, we saw and eagle (that didn't stop for paparazzi, thank you). It was like this magical woodland day. Not perfect, mind you - that last goal Brazil made against Oz was just awful - but it was sort of decompressing and resting, and changing gears.

We finished the long, long, long (and yet - only 2 dyas?) weekend at a local ice cream shop that we go to named Grumpy's. Bear twirling on the stools and me sipping an iced coffee and the sun refusing to set.

Happy, relaxed, together.

Yeah. hot. yikes. I had about 5 layers of crinolin on, and the layer on my legs felt like saran wrap. Almost like the plastic they used for the hot wax treatment for my spa manicure/pedicure two days before.

And yet, the day was truely magical. By the way, the reading was beautiful.

And tell me about it. Wasn't that a great hat? Linda's got major style.
